Medical Abortion (sometimes called “the abortion pill” or non-surgical abortion) uses two medications, Mifepristone and Misoprostol, to end a pregnancy. These medications cause changes in the lining of the uterus and muscle contractions that expel the pregnancy tissue. Medical Abortion is recommend for early pregnancies only. It can be done as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed up to 49 days by ultrasound. Medical Abortion involves several steps and requires at least two office visits. On the first visit, one of our trained ultrasound technicians will determine the length of your pregnancy. Before you can take the first of the two drugs to start the abortion process, you will have lab work done and meet with a Health Educator to discuss the benefits and risks of having a Medical Abortion. If you decide on the procedure then you must sign a consent form acknowledging that you understand the risks of the procedure. After an exam, you will be given Mifepristone tablets to take in the doctor's office. Two days later, you take 4 pills at home of Misoprostol. The abortion may occur within 4 hours after ingesting the second medication, but it may take as long as 24 to 48 hours or longer. Vaginal bleeding and uterine cramping are a normal part of this abortion procedure and will occur in almost all patients. Misoprostol may also cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms. Using pain relievers and anti-nausea medication can reduce some of these effects. Two weeks later, you will return for an important follow-up visit. Your doctor will check whether your pregnancy has completely ended. If you are still pregnant, a surgical procedure will be necessary. |
